After an initial visit to see firsthand Junior Roller Derby and our community, we offer an 8 week program. For a flat $75 fee we have lessons designed to give a good foundation to the skills and help your skater decide if Roller Derby is a sport they want to continue playing! RJR provides the safety gear (based on availability) and can borrow skates to use during practice!
How Does it work
#1 -Fill out the information form and come visit RJR on a New Skater day! You can observe practice or skate with us. No skating experience is necessary! You will be asked to complete a waiver. There is NO FEE to come check us out! #2 - To continue, fill out our electronic form which contains emergency contacts / health and safety information. Pay the $75 fee for the new skater program. #3 - Plan to come the next 8 weeks on Sundays. If you miss a week, we will catch up the following week. Each week will have a mix of skating practice, learning to play roller derby, and strength training tips. We may play some beginner "no contact" roller derby! #4 - After 8 weeks, if you continue with RJR we will add you to our full roster! You will pay our membership dues monthly, and can cancel anytime. Skaters in our new skater program can attend all our practices, but cannot participate in bouts with other teams.
What Do you Teach?
Basic Skating Skills: Derby Position, Skating Forward, T-Stops, Plow Stops, Falling Safely (knee taps, knee falls, 4 point falls), basic skating agility, sticky skating, one-leg glides. Other skills may also be taught. Derby Rules and Gameplay: How to score points, what the players do on the track, basic penalties, whistles, jamming, blocking, track boundaries. NOTE: New Skaters are no-contact. Learning to push and hit is an advanced skill.
When is New Skater Day?
We aim to have a new skater day about once every other month, excluding during summer months. When one cohort ends, the next one begins. Drop us a note using the contact or registration forms and we will let you know when the next date is! While waiting for new skater day we recommend going to open skates at the roller rink, watching some roller derby footage on YouTube, and learning more about the sport!
